He was Born in the little town of Friars Point, Miss.  on  Sept. 1, 1933.  He was named Harold Jenkins and it wasn't until many years later, 24 years to be exact, that he became the beloved country singer Conway Twitty.   In 1957 Harold Jenkins decided to change his name, so by taking two towns in Arkansas and combining their two names Conway Twitty was the end result, and that is how got his new name.  

His father was a riverboat pilot, and knew how to play guitar.  By the time Conway was four years old his father had taught him his first guitar chords.  From an  early age he was exposed to different types of music, whether it be gospel sounds from the Black church in town, or the Saturday night family get-togethers when they gathered around the radio for The Grand Ole Opry.  It was after his family moved to Helena, Ark.,  that he formed his first band, the Phillips County Ramblers.  It was 2 years after this that he had his own local radio show -  every Saturday morning.  Conway Twitty's second passion was for baseball, and while he still lived in Arkansas he was quite involved in this other passion.  After high school was finished Twitty even received an offer to play for the Philadelphia Phillies Baseball Team, but he opted to join the Army instead.

It wasn't until after his discharge from the Army that Conway Twitty was free to go after his first love wholeheartedly, and again pursue a musical career.  The year was 1957, and it was right around this point that he made the official name change and became Conway Twitty. (as mentioned near the start of this biography)  He headed for the Sun Studios in Memphis, Tenn.,  and Twitty began writing original rock 'n' roll material.  This new style material he was writing, a completely different style than his colleagues (or competitors if you will) and their 'Rockabilly' style or genre of music scored him his first hit with "It's Only Make Believe," on MGM in 1958.  With this hit, a teen ballad, it helped turn him into ' a teen idol of the day '.  About eight years later Twitty already had three gold records under his belt and 'officially' started his already successful career by signing with MCA/Decca, the year was  1965.  

Conway Twitty continued his productive and fame filled career with success after success, from his record breaking albums and over the next decade and a half he even changed labels and released several remakes of popular songs by differentartists.                                                While performing in Branson, Mo., in the summer of  1993 Conway Twitty  fell ill suddenly and unexpectedly.  He suffered from an abdominal aneurysm and died, and ironically shortly before his untimely death he recorded a new album called Final Touches.  In 1999 Conway Twitty was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, after what can only be labeled a brilliant career.  Conway Twitty's amazing career is illlustrated below by the list of his many musical compilations and achievments.
